The Pancake Event
There are times in the life of a nor divergent individual when you can tell that their actions and words are influenced by their condition. However, there are moments especially as a parent when you realize it has nothing to do with autism. Some behaviors are just typical childhood antics like being sneaky.
I can recount one incident “the Pancake Event”. Now I believe that children no matter their know a logical state can learn they may not be able to learn rocket science but then they can learn common social skills common social courtesies. So, Nicholas is a person who always loves pancakes, especially banana pancakes he's crazy about them and so am I! A long time ago when he was probably between 11 or 14, somewhere there, I made a big batch of banana pancakes. For some reason I left the kitchen I didn't eat any. Upon my return I realized the plate was completely empty I said to myself he can't be serious. Did you know do you know that Nicholas ate all of them “every last one”. This isn't autism this is just him being inconsiderate.
Sometime after I made another batch, and I sat down, and I ate all of them all by myself he surely learned the lesson. It's crucial to differentiate when our kids are acting due to their condition and when they're just being kids, and we must teach them that they must consider themselves rightfully, but they must consider others as well.
As a Caribbean mother, I believe in being firm and direct to instill good values in my children. In the Caribbean we tend to say, “who nah hear will feel” and so when children feel they learn the lesson that was difficult for them to grasp through speech alone.
Now I have no issues with him concerning this thing. He is now, always mindful of me! Futhermore he has mastered frying his own and at times offers me a few............. great things can come from them!
Translation: "Dem fry good no wa"-"They were fried very well"
