The birthday........ 21? Oh yesssssss

Milestone birthdays usually call for grand celebrations, but Nickolas opted for a more low-key approach for his 21st. Rather than hosting a huge party, he chose to celebrate with just me, proving that celebrations can be done in a simplistic but meaningful way… and so that’s what we did!

On his 21st birthday, I reflected upon the journey as a parent of a child with autism. As an "autism mom," I had not envisioned reaching this milestone in this manner. The age of 21 signifies the end of childhood and the beginning of adulthood, and I have mixed feelings about what this means for Nicholas. Chronologically, he is now considered an adult, having lived on this planet for 21 years. During this time, he has accomplished numerous feats, demonstrating initiative, making informed decisions, being more responsible, and vigilant regarding safety.

This milestone prompted me to journal my thoughts. A family conversation reminded me to consider what Nicholas might have achieved if he were not on the spectrum. However, I quickly dismissed such thoughts as they bring sadness. Though I am a realist, I sometimes ponder the prospects for my children, valuing education and entrepreneurship highly. Had circumstances been different, I believe Nicholas would be in university and possibly involved in entrepreneurial endeavors.

This 21st birthday marks a new era for Nicholas, filled with possibilities and advancements.

Our focus this year will be on establishing him as an entrepreneur. In that way he can continue to contribute positively to society, by working, paying taxes helping others, and achieve personal milestones like having a family, a home driving a car.

Nicholas continues to be a remarkable individual, perceived by others as handsome, easygoing, and rule-abiding and I am proud to be his mother!

This vision for my 21-year-old son may differ from conventional expectations especially within the society we live in, but Nicholas will acquire the necessary skills to lead a prosperous life. With God's guidance, he will succeed.
