When I returned from my studies, I quickly realized there so many things he missed out on learning in school, and sadly, I hadn’t taught him as a parent either. That’s when our journey towards his independence kicked off with “Nickos’s Mom”. So, what did we dive into first? Food! Nutrition plays a super important role in the life of someone who is Neurodivergent, and living in the Caribbean can be tricky since we tend to indulge in a lot of foods that experts say fuel autism. We kicked things off with a detailed neurological assessment. Yes, therapy was a part of the plan too! He discovered which foods could help reduce his autistic tendencies and which ones could make them worse. Excessive soda, cheesy snacks and flour had to be reduced. After that we embarked on a journey of “How to Grocery Shop”. Check out this clip from his first solo shopping experience! Isn't it so cool that the date on the chips snack is sporting Nickos Birthday? What a unique coinsidence!
But on a serious note.........we learn and then we learn again! His basket was filled with the same challenging foods, he did however pick up less so its a start!
